Следовательно, он на протяжении всей своей жизни был в высшей степени благосклонен к царю, который доверил ему командование своей столицей во время его отсутствия в России. В 1696 году разработанный Гордоном проект "подвижной рамы" сыграл ключевую роль в том, чтобы помочь русским взять Азова. Генерал Гордон оставил после себя уникально подробный дневник своей жизни и времени, написанный на английском языке. Это сохранилось в рукописи в Российском государственном архиве милиции в Москве. В 1859 году в Абердине (Шотландия) под руководством Джозефа Робертсона были напечатаны отрывки из дневника генерала Патрика Гордона из Auchchries (1635-1699) для Spalding Club.
